David was born in Mutare on February 2, 1946. He only completed standard six education due to a lack of financial resources. David started sculpting funny and lovely sculptures at the age of 15. He was helped by his brother, John Gwatirwa, who taught him how to make good abstracts. In 1969 he moved to Victoria Falls Craft Village for two years. After this tenure he joined Canon Patterson Craft Village. These experiences aided in his work reaching new heights of maturity and originality, definitely a talent worthy of adding to the stable of outstanding Zimbabwe stone sculptures.
